That is always an impossible question to answer, at least for 2-3 years bare minimum.
The cowardly answer is… I liked every team that traded for extra picks in 2014. That appears to be a much more talent-rich pool of players, and the teams with the foresight to parlay picks this year into picks next year were smarter than the rest. So: St. Louis, Cleveland, Minnesota, San Francisco, and Oakland (I’m leaving out a few others).
Once again, I smoked Mel Kiper, Jr. in my draft predictions.
Taking the first round as an example, I’ve listed how far off I was and how far off Mel was.

Updated 4/24/13
ROUND 1
1. Kansas City Chiefs – OT Luke Joeckel, Texas A&M
The Chiefs have secured their QB spot with the acquisitions of Alex Smith and Chase Daniel. They are working on a trade with Miami for incumbent LT Branden Albert (which I think they’ll get done). All signs point to a left tackle selection here. The question is: Joeckel or Fisher? I suspect they’ll go with the guy who anchored the best offensive line in football last year (with apologies to Alabama).
2. Jacksonville Jaguars – OT Eric Fisher, Central Michigan
The Jaguars take who they consider to be the best remaining player on the board. They also prepare for the 2014 free agency departure of LT Eugene Monroe. In so doing, they avoid paying the ridiculous salary demands a veteran left tackle requires and roll the dice on a rookie.
3. Oakland Raiders - DT Sharrif Floyd, Florida
As I write this, I get the feeling the Raiders will trade out of this pick, but I can’t figure who they’ll trade with. Lions? Chargers? Niners? The Raiders have more holes than perhaps any other team in the NFL. If they hold on to the pick, they have an obligation to take the best player available – because that will always fill a position of need. Since they satisfied their need for a starting quarterback with the trade for Matt Flynn, Floyd should be their pick.
*4. San Diego Chargers (PROJ. TRADE W/PHI) – OT Lane Johnson, Oklahoma
I’m amazed the Chargers would leave themselves without a left tackle this long into free agency. They have to get ahead of Detroit to make sure they get one of the only three blue-chip LT candidates (and they’d never trade with in-division rival Oakland), so they give up three picks (one next year) to the Eagles to move up seven spots and select Lane Johnson.
5. Detroit Lions – DE/OLB Dion Jordan, Oregon
The Lions parted ways with two of their top pass-rushing ends this year, and they’re delighted to see Dion Jordan still available. They would have preferred to replace retired LT Jeff Backus, but Jordan is just as essential.
6. Cleveland Browns – CB Dee Milliner, Alabama
The Browns don’t see any of their incumbents starting on the other side of Joe Haden, and they invested in OLB rather than CB on the free agency market. Time for Milliner to go off the board. He doesn’t have elite ball skills, but he’s fast as hell. The Browns aren’t too shaken by Milliner’s past health issues.
7. Arizona Cardinals – G/C Jonathan Cooper, North Carolina
I’m torn on this selection. I could see the Cardinals engaged in a hot debate about whether to take a guard or a pass-rusher. In the end, I think they go conservative and take a sure-fire Pro Bowler at guard or center.
8. Buffalo Bills – QB Geno Smith, West Virginia
I just can’t bring myself to believe that the Bills would take Ryan Nassib at #8. I know that’s the rumor. I know that legitimate beat reporters are saying this could happen. I just can’t do it. Nassib is NOT a sure-fire NFL QB. He’s just not. This feels like a colossal mistake for Doug Marrone and the Bills franchise. I’m sticking with the far-superior Geno Smith until I’m proven wrong.
9. New York Jets – OLB/DE Barkevious Mingo, LSU
For some reason, the Jets love Mingo. This selection will prove to be the last mistake Rex Ryan makes as the head coach of this franchise. Mingo has a burst, but he’s allergic to the weight room and he’s got no push once he’s locked up. So far, I’ve seen to reason to believe that the Jets locker room can curb the slacker instincts of a rookie in need of guidance. Mingo may not be a Vernon Gholston-level bust, but he could be up there.
10. Tennessee Titans – G Chance Warmack, Alabama
The Titans picked up a couple of offensive linemen in free agency, but they’re still so disgusted with their 2012 line that they reach a bit for the best interior lineman on the board. Warmack probably shouldn’t be the 2nd guard off the board considering his dominating college performances, but the Titans are happy he’s still here.
*11. Philadelphia Eagles (PROJ. TRADE W/SD) – DT Star Lotulelei, Utah
The Eagles trade down and still get the guy they were looking at. Chip Kelly wants his team to be bigger up front, and Lotulelei allows them to do just that. He’s a monster against the run, and once he’s no longer double-teamed as he was in college, he can probably be a force rushing up the middle too.
12. Miami Dolphins – DE/OLB Ezekiel Ansah, BYU
The Dolphins could use a push on the other side of Cameron Wake as they transition to a 4-3 defense. Ansah is a raw talent still learning how to play football, so he can be used sparingly in his first year behind Jared Odrick and Olivier Vernon, but this is a talent too great to let fall any farther. This pick is contingent on the Dolphins working out a deal for LT Branden Albert. If not, they could go with D.J. Fluker here.
*13. San Francisco 49’ers (PROJ. TRADE W/NYJ THRU TB) – WR Tavon Austin, West Virginia
The Niners have FAR too many picks, so they wheel and deal a bit to get up to #13 and take the home-run hitting WR they whiffed on with the selection of A.J. Jenkins last year. Austin offers a different skill-set than Anquan Boldin and Michael Crabtree. He’s the type of player who gets offensive coordinators all hot and bothered coming up with new ways to get the ball in his hands in space.
14. Carolina Panthers – DT Sheldon Richardson, Missouri
The Panthers haven’t been able to find answers at defensive tackle since Kris Jenkins left town. Richardson might have been a top-10 talent if the depth at defensive line weren’t so great this year, so the Panthers get a steal here.
15. New Orleans Saints – OT D.J. Fluker, Alabama
The Saints lost LT Jermon Bushrod to the Bears in free agency, and they’re taking a bit of a risk on 2010 2nd-round pick Charles Brown there now. Career backup Zach Strief and colossal bust Jason Smith are penciled in to compete for right tackle. I think the Saints would be wise to bring in Fluker, plug him in at right tackle, and let Strief and Smith duke it out for the swing tackle job.
16. St. Louis Rams – FS Kenny Vaccaro, Texas
The Rams are ridiculously light at safety right now. If they’re able to land this year’s best at the position at #16, they’ll be delirious.
17. Pittsburgh Steelers – DE/OLB Jarvis Jones, Georgia
The Steelers aren’t crazy about the incumbents in line to replace James Harrison, so they take a little bit of a risk on Jarvis Jones. He excelled at the position in college, but he’s got medical and personal red flags that would normally dissuade a team like Pittsburgh from selecting him. The word on the street is Jones will NOT fall past the Steelers, and even in the haze of pre-draft smoke screens, I believe this one.
*18. Minnesota Vikings (PROJ. TRADE W/ DAL) – WR Cordarrelle Patterson, Tennessee
The Vikings don’t have the stomach to wait for Patterson to fall to them, so they deal to get up to the Cowboys pick (offering their earliest first and their third in the process). Patterson needs some grooming, but with steady veteran Greg Jennings in the locker room, he’s off to a good start. Patterson is an ideal deep threat as a rookie. If only Christian Ponder could get it there…
19. New York Giants – DE Tank Carradine, Florida State
The Giants have plenty of needs other than defensive end, but that’s never stopped them before. The team has a recent history of taking a DE and/or a WR in the first two rounds, and this year should be no exception. With the loss of Osi Umenyiora to free agency, the Giants add another big body to their pass-rushing rotation with the Tank.
20. Chicago Bears – QB Matt Barkley, USC
The Bears prepare for the 2014 free agency departure of QB Jay Cutler by selecting the USC signal-caller. Great head for the game; below-average arm for it (the exact opposite of Cutler). The Bears may be happy to stick him on the bench for a year and see how he develops.
21. Cincinnati Bengals – SS Jonathan Cyprien, Florida International
The Bengals have neglected their safety position for far too long. Cyprien didn’t face terrific competition in school, but he’s more than held his own against the big boys in post-season performances since then. The Bengals are intrigued.
22. St. Louis Rams (via WAS) – LB Arthur Brown, Kansas State
The Rams take a look at the wide receivers available and decide there’s similar value in the later rounds. The team is still light at linebacker, so they reach a bit for the speedy Brown and plug him in at WLB (and hope Jo-Lonn Dunbar can slide over to the strong side and play as well as he did last year).
*23. Dallas Cowboys (PROJ. TRADE W/ MIN) – FS Eric Reid, LSU
The Cowboys deal down to pick up extra selections and still fill a position of need with Eric Reid. He does a lot to get defensive backs organized – something that doesn’t always get noticed on the stat sheet. He’s a great leader, and that’s something Dallas could dearly use.
24. Indianapolis Colts – CB D.J. Hayden, Houston
While corner is no longer a glaring need for the Colts, Hayden’s value seems to be sky-high among NFL front offices. Hayden suffered a life-threatening injury in a practice last year, and since then, his name barely came up in draft prep (at least among outsiders). His recent individual workout showed that he’ll likely be ready for the start of the 2013 campaign. So the Colts pull the trigger. Besides, you can always use another corner.
25. Minnesota Vikings (THRU SEA) – DT Sylvester Williams, North Carolina
The Vikings will have a lot of issues with free agency in 2014. Four of their top defensive linemen will all be up for new contracts, so Minnesota needs to get an early start on backfilling the line. They strongly consider Manti Te’o here but decide to slide Erin Henderson into the MLB spot and find outside talent later.
26. Green Bay Packers – TE Tyler Eifert, Notre Dame
The Packers consider many, many other players here. But they settle on the consensus top tight end available this year. They prepare to say goodbye to Jermichael Finley in free agency next year by taking as complete a tight end as we’ve seen since Rob Gronkowski.
27. Houston Texans – LB Manti Te’o, Notre Dame
If the Texans defense had a weakness last year, it was in the middle of the linebacking corps. Once Brian Cushing went down, the team looked very mortal up the middle. Te’o couldn’t have landed in a better place. There are so many defensive stars on the team that he’ll be surrounded by playmakers. He won’t be expected to “save” a team. He can just play his position and rack up tackles.
28. Denver Broncos – DE Damontre Moore, Texas A&M
The Broncos need to replace the pass-rush they lost with the Elvis Dumervil contract eff-up. Moore has experienced a slow, steady drop down draft boards due to his painful post-season performances, but his game tape is impressive enough to keep him in the first round. Former teammate Von Miller makes this pick happen behind the scenes.
29. New England Patriots – CB Jamar Taylor, Boise State
The Patriots only re-signed Aqib Talib for one year. With Ras-I Dowling a constant injury distraction and Devin McCourty looking comfortable at safety, the Pats once again need to address the corner position. The word is the Pats have fallen in love with Taylor; they’ve paid him a visit as well as welcomed him to Foxboro.
30. Atlanta Falcons – CB Xavier Rhodes, Florida State
The Falcons could really use some help at corner now that Brent Grimes and Dunta Robinson have left the squad. Rhodes is one of the new breed of corners – tall, big-bodied, and able to knock receivers off the line and disrupt their patterns.
*31. New York Jets (PROJ. TRADE W/SF) – QB Ryan Nassib, Syracuse
The Jets deal down with the Niners and end up with 4 of the top 40 picks in the draft. New GM John Idzik is cleaning house and building HIS team. The Jets can’t wait for Mark Sanchez to turn his career around. They deal Tim Tebow on draft day to the Jaguars and pick up Nassib to take over in 2014 (perhaps mid-2013).
32. Baltimore Ravens – SS Matt Elam, Florida
The Ravens have quietly turned around their dreadful off-season by acquiring FS Michael Huff, OLB Elvis Dumervil, and ILB Rolando McClain. Provided McClain can stay out of jail long enough to suit up, the Ravens aren’t nearly as depleted as previously thought. But they still need a strong safety, and that’s where Elam comes in. He’s smaller than you’d like, but he’s one heat-seeking-missile of a man. Ravens fans will fall in love with his first massive hit.

Ha! Yes, Jerry Jones is always fun to predict on draft day. Even Mo Claiborne didn’t know Jerry was coming for him until the call came in.
I will not be going to the draft this year. That tradition has likely ended for good. From 1999-2010, I was a regular, but it had to end sometime. I’ll miss some parts of the trip; other parts, I’ll be happy to miss while I’m on a comfortable couch eating and drinking whatever the hell I want.

That’s a fair point. I’ll have them make a move for a CB if the value is there.

ROUND 1
1. INDIANAPOLIS COLTS – QB Andrew Luck (Stanford)
The team has already informed Mr. Luck that he will replace Peyton Manning behind a shoddy offensive line and with limited receiving options. Enjoy!
2. WASHINGTON REDSKINS (THRU STL) – QB Robert Griffin III (Baylor)
The Redskins just placed a lot of faith in young Robert Griffin III. If he is anything less than Peyton Manning’s arm meets Michael Vick’s legs, this trade will cripple the team for the remainder of the decade. I mean absolutely no offense to Mr. Griffin – he seems like a stand-up guy - but this trade is awful in so many ways.
3. ST. LOUIS RAMS (proj. trade w/MIN) – RB Trent Richardson (Alabama)
The Rams use some of the windfall they got in the Redskins trade to move ahead of Cleveland and Tampa to take the player they covet, Trent Richardson. While the Rams have many, many immediate needs, their running back situation is almost as pressing. Steven Jackson still has some ability, but he’s never been a huge TD threat and he’s getting worn down. While I personally believe it’s silly to draft a running back this high in a passing league, Richardson has been called by many the best prospect since Adrian Peterson.
4. CLEVELAND BROWNS – CB Morris Claiborne (LSU)
Rotokingdom.net’s Blacklabel makes a damn good point. This is too high for Tannehill or Blackmon. RB and WR are needs, but there will be great value at those positions later in the draft. Take the best player available: Morris Claiborne. The Browns could certainly use an upgrade over Sheldon Brown, a free agent next year anyway. The pair of Joe Haden and Claiborne could elevate this defensive squad from above average to top 10.
5. BUFFALO BILLS (proj. trade w/TB) – OT Matt Kalil (USC)
The Bills need a left tackle more than any team in the NFL right now. Demetress Bell split for the Eagles, and the Bills have no one to take his place. They really should move ahead of Minnesota if they want to solve their problem.
6. MINNESOTA VIKINGS (proj. trade w/STL) – WR Justin Blackmon (Oklahoma State)
The Vikings value three players equally, so they trade down to #6, where they know they can still get one of those players (since they don’t want Luck, RGIII or Trent). It’s a smart trade. Blackmon would give the team a significant upgrade over Michael Jenkins and give them some insurance against Percy Harvin’s frequent migraine absences and Jerome Simpson’s fondness for Mary Jane.
7. NEW YORK JETS (proj. trade w/JAX) – DE/OLB Melvin Ingram (South Carolina)
The Jets move way up to select their pass-rush specialist of the future, Melvin Ingram. They fell in love with Ingram during the post-season, and they arrange a big trade to solve their long-lasting OLB problems. New York gives Jacksonville their 1st, 2nd and 5th round selections this year and a 2nd next year.
8. MIAMI DOLPHINS – QB Ryan Tannehill (Texas A&M)
It’s been a rough period for the Dolphins front office. They missed out on Peyton Manning, Matt Flynn, and Robert Griffin III. They’re lucky Tannehill is still on the board here. They’ll take him and stash him on the bench for a while as he learns the pro game – letting Matt Moore and David Garrard battle in camp for the temporary starting job.
9. CAROLINA PANTHERS – DT Fletcher Cox (Mississippi State)
The Panthers ignored the middle of the D-line last year – even though it was a glaring need. Their two mid-round picks last year failed to excite, and Carolina needs to shore up the tackle spot. Cox’s star has been rising since the Combine, and he may have overtaken Dontari Poe to be the first DT off the board.
10. TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS (proj. trade w/BUF) - ILB Luke Kuechly (Boston College)
The Bucs missed out on Trent Richardson and Morris Claiborne, so they trade down and still get a great player at a need position. Kuechly has been compared to Brian Urlacher, which sounds great to Tampa fans. They’ve had serious problems with middle linebacker for a few years now, so it’s time to get serious about the spot.
11. KANSAS CITY CHIEFS – G David DeCastro (Stanford)
While guard isn’t a massive need for the Chiefs, they can’t let this guy fall any farther. DeCastro is an amazing prospect, and with the addition of Eric Winston and DeCastro, this looks like the best line in the league (something KC enjoyed throughout much of the ‘90’s).
12. SAN DIEGO CHARGERS (proj. trade w/SEA) – S Mark Barron (Alabama)
The Seahawks missed out on DeCastro and Kuechly, and they immediately accept the Chargers trade offer. San Diego wants to get ahead of Dallas to select Mark Barron, the best safety prospect to come out in years.
13. ARIZONA CARDINALS – WR Michael Floyd (Notre Dame)
The Cardinals are impressed enough with Floyd to ignore their offensive line needs for a round or two. Larry Fitzgerald has been the team’s only reliable target for a couple years now, and that’s got to change if the team wants to get back to the Super Bowl.
14. DALLAS COWBOYS – NT Dontari Poe (Memphis)
The Cowboys want to revamp their defensive line, and Poe is an intriguing piece of that puzzle. If he shows enough tenacity to start as a rookie, he takes over at nose and Jay Ratliff kicks to DE. Opinions vary on Poe’s projected effectiveness at the next level, but the Cowboys love his potential.
15. PHILADELPHIA EAGLES – DE Quinton Coples (North Carolina)
The Eagles would have loved Fletcher Cox here, but he’s long gone. Coples could really flourish in Jim Washburn’s wide-9 system, especially if he gains enough weight to play DT in the NFL.
16. JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS (proj. trade w/NYJ) – CB Stephon Gilmore (South Carolina)
The Jaguars slide down to the middle of the round and still end up with an ascending player. Defensive end is a possibility here as well, but Gilmore has been climbing the charts all off-season. The Jaguars could certainly use his help, and reportedly they love Gilmore more than Morris Claiborne.
17. CINCINNATI BENGALS (THRU OAK) – OT Riley Reiff (Iowa)
The Bengals are looking at some serious offensive line problems if they don’t address them soon. Nate Livings and Bobbie Williams are gone. Andre Smith is a free agent next year. The two guards have been replaced through free agency, but the team should grab Riley Reiff to play right tackle once draft-bust Smith moves on. Reiff is a great value here.
18. SEATTLE SEAHAWKS (proj. trade w/SD) – ILB Dont’a Hightower (Alabama)
The Seahawks trade down and find their middle linebacker of the future. Dont’a Hightower isn’t far behind Luke Kuechly in talent, and he may even become a better pro in the right system. This is the Seahawks’ biggest need, and they luck out in picking up an ILB and extra picks.
19. CHICAGO BEARS — DE Whitney Mercilus (Syracuse)
The Bears are looking for someone to pair with Julius Peppers, and they find their man in Whitney Mercilus. He needs more game experience before he’ll break out, but Mercilus offers a threatening presence on the weak side of the defense.
20. TENNESSEE TITANS - CB Dre Kirkpatrick (Alabama)
The Titans lost Cortland Finnegan in free agency, so Kirkpatrick makes perfect sense here. He’s arguably a better prospect than Stephon Gilmore, who went a few spots ahead of him. The team of Kirkpatrick, Jason McCourty and Alterraun Verner makes for a potent group of corners.
21. CINCINNATI BENGALS – WR Kendall Wright (Baylor)
The Bengals gave up on Jerome Simpson, so they’ll need to reload at WR. Slot receiver Jordan Shipley missed all of 2011, but the team really needs someone to stretch the field for A.J. Green. Kendall Wright could be a perfect fit in Cincy’s improving offense.
22. CLEVELAND BROWNS (THRU ATL) – WR Rueben Randle (LSU)
The Browns begin their offensive rebuilding project here with the ascending Rueben Randle, a sure-handed, physical receiver in the Michael Irvin mold.
23. DETROIT LIONS - DE Chandler Jones (Syracuse)
Kyle Vanden Bosch is in his mid-30’s. Cliff Avril wants out without a big contract. Lawrence Jackson is a stop-gap measure. The Lions need to think about loading up their line with the next generation of pass rushers. Chandler Jones has been compared to Jason Pierre-Paul for his measurable and his raw potential. The Lions are building one monster of a D-line here.
24. PITTSBURGH – OT/G Mike Adams (Ohio State)
Pittsburgh would have loved the draft Dont’a Hightower, but they missed their chance. They did quite like what they saw out of Mike Adams though, and they’re content with this selection. The O-line needs a lot of work in Pittsburgh – it has for years. Adams may prove to be a better LT option than Marcus Gilbert in training camp, but ideally he’s better off on the right side.
25. DENVER BRONCOS – DT Michael Brockers (LSU)
The Broncos have serious needs at defensive tackle, and luckily 2012 seems to be one of the deepest years for DT talent in a decade. Brockers is young and raw, but his promise is off the charts.
26. HOUSTON TEXANS – TE Coby Fleener (Stanford)
The Texans lost Joel Dressen to free agency, and they’re still unsure of how permanently injuries have weakened their starter, Owen Daniels. Fleener could absolutely be the receiving complement to Andre Johnson the team has needed for years now.
27. NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS (THRU NO) – DE/OLB Courtney Upshaw (Alabama)
The Patriots need DE help badly, especially if they don’t re-sign Andre Carter. They have transitioned to a hybrid defense, and Upshaw is an interesting project for a D like that. He’s played both 3-4 and 4-3 in college, and he’s excelled at both.
28. GREEN BAY PACKERS – DE/OLB Shea McClellin (Boise State)
Man, has this guy risen up the boards! The workhorse defensive end with coverage skills from Boise State was invited to attend the Draft in New York, which isn’t something the NFL does without knowing a team or two views him as a first-round possibility. The Packers need someone to pair with Clay Matthews, and McClellin is practically a carbon copy of the guy.
29. BALTIMORE RAVENS – G/T Cordy Glenn (Georgia)
The Ravens have had their problems with offensive line recently. Bryant McKinnie and Matt Birk are one step away from retirement. Jah Reid appears to be a bust. Ben Grubbs left in free agency. The teams needs to start loading up again, and they’re lucky to find Cordy Glenn at #29. He can immediately take over a guard spot, and he could be groomed to play left tackle.
30. SAN FRANCISCO 49’ERS – WR Stephen Hill (Georgia Tech)
The Niners loaded up on wide receivers in free agency with Randy Moss and Mario Manningham coming to the bay area. Hill is perhaps the most physically-talented WR prospect this year, but he’s also INCREDIBLY raw. He’s never run a full route tree, and he’ll need a redshirt year before he can be of any use. Think of Hill as next year’s Randy Moss.
31. NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS – C Peter Konz (Wisconsin)
The Patriots re-signed Dan Koppen and they’re not unhappy with his replacement last year, Dan Connolly. But the Pats have always been great at seeing the chess board a couple moves ahead of everyone else, and they know neither Koppen nor Connolly will be around in a couple years. Konz is easily the best center available this year, and he may be the smartest player in the draft. Belichick has got to love this guy.
32. NEW YORK GIANTS – RB Doug Martin (Boise State)
The Giants let Brandon Jacobs walk in free agency after a turbulent stay in NYC. Ahmad Bradshaw will need a running mate there, and Martin is the most complete back still on the board. He’s way ahead of the curve when it comes to running routes and blocking blitzers. The Giants will love this guy.
ROUND 2
33. ST. LOUIS - DT Devon Still (Penn State)
34. INDIANAPOLIS – CB Janoris Jenkins (North Alabama)

37. CLEVELAND – QB Brandon Weeden (Oklahoma State)
38. JACKSONVILLE – WR Alshon Jeffery (South Carolina)
